Booker Prize Long List Announced

I’m inclined to agree with Damien Walter in his analysis of the long list of selections for Britain’s Man Booker Prize – the lack of any recognition of speculative fiction speaks to the current inadequacies not only of the award, but also the makeup of the judging panel. He is damning in his criticism and I find myself nodding along as I read through his post. We could quibble on the bigoted part of his analysis, although it seems pretty close to the mark when you look at the last several years of the jury and their selections. Ignore the genre at your own peril – there are far too many excellent works coming out of Britain to not be included in (at the very least), the long list.
