Last Dragon
I mentioned previously that I was reading J. M. McDermott’s debut effort – Last Dragon. What I neglected to mention that was I have periods where I ebb and flow with regards to being a voracious consumer of books. I admit that the first few pages of this book had me raising an eyebrow or two, but as I nestled in, I realized I was in for something truly great. It’s a book that has done the singularly powerful job of rousing me out of my reading doldrums and putting together a new stack of books to tear through.
This cannot be emphasized enough – this is a book that will not only make you want to read it, and wish for more, but it will make you want to just plain READ. Read for the hope that there are other works out there like it. I may be gushing like a fanboy, but sometimes you don’t care. It’s just that good. The characters create their own mold – they were carved from something better than that what went before. McDermott isn’t standing on the shoulders of giants, he cast them down from their peak and declared himself the Mountain King. I can’t wait to see his sophomore effort.
